I think you've nailed it.

Particularly your statement about never thinking it would happen in 21st century america. or that lynch mobs would not only be overlooked, they'd be celebrated. On a night with a debate taking place in Nashville, TN, a place that is not exactly friendly to minorities, particularly minorities running for President. I discovered that when I was back there in July. Ugly, hideous stuff.
