Depression

as in: The Great Depression, in the U.S., in the 1930's.

I am reading (yes, I admit it) a series of American Girl books about a girl (ostensibly) in Cincinnati in 1934. The books are supposed to show you how plucky and resourceful she is; but reading the background information at the end of each book is like cold water in the face. It was a very hard, bad time for a LOT of people. The stock market didn't recover (Cat'r found this on Wikipedia) to the level it had been at in 1929 again until 1954! Very scary, people being evicted with no notice whatsoever, just having their belongings put out on the street.

Could we ever get there again? I so hope not. The banks are now insured by the federal government so they won't fail...but of course, what happens if the government would fail? Could that happen? I don't have much of *any* faith in the current administration. All I can do is have hope for 2008 (and perhaps more Democrats getting into Congress late this year).

Of course it doesn't help that Bunnicula and I have been watching "Upstairs, Downstairs" and are in the War Years (WWI) right now. Very upsetting, so much death and privation...We're not up to the Roaring 20's in that series yet.
