Olympics fever!

We didn't watch the opening ceremonies. But as the days went by, we ended up watching a bit more each day: skeleton, bobsled (women's bobsled: Jill Bakken and Vonetta Flowers--woohoo!), ice dancing, snowboarding, luge, ski jumping, speed skating, freestyle skiing, etc. We became more interested in the Olympics this time because the coverage has been MUCH BETTER than it had been for the games in Nagano. I was even up around 4am this morning, watching women's curling! And I watched some of it this afternoon too (too bad the U.S. didn't medal, but it was really interesting to watch!).

And then tonight. Wow! I hadn't seen all of the women's figure skating short program the other night (Bunnicula saw more than I did), so I had no idea what to expect from Sarah Hughes or Sasha Cohen. Wow! After Sarah Hughes skated, I was hoping she would win the gold medal--such passion, grace, strength! The medals turned out the way I personally felt they should. I really really liked Irina Slutskaya, from what I saw of her in the short program; and I thought she really should've been marked higher in that than Michelle Kwan. So tonight's results seemed exactly right: the best and most wonderful won the gold :-) the others came in according to their technical merit AND presentation, not according to who was most popular or most well-known or any other artificial result (which for a long time has seemed to be the way figure skating was judged). Sarah Hughes was just sparkling and exciting and nearly PERFECT! Such a wonderful skater and such a bubbly and cute person. :-) It was such a treat to watch this tonight, live. :-)
