Reviews (sort-of) of virtual pets
This is actually a reply I did to some questions
weathermanphil asked. It is a rather long and rambling comment. [EDIT Jan. 16, 2008: adding here, rather than linking]
Chirpy-Chi (this is how Tiger spells it, capitalizing the second C) is fun. I don't know how you access all 40 (!) songs, unless that includes song fragments. But he does snatches of classical and nursery rhymes and all kinds of things. I am getting a strong feeling that the song they (all the Robo-chi pets) can all sing together is "Ode to Joy". :-D I had Chirpy-Chi and Meow-Chi facing each other and touched their sensors, to get them to sing together. It was hilarious! They both "sang" the same song ("Ode to Joy"), but slightly out-of-synch and in slightly different keys! :-D
Have you seen Mutsu? We only got the first edition of it over here in the States. Some of the other releases in Japan look sooo cute! But I really like Mutsu a LOT (Mutsu The Water Looper (Japan) aka Mutsu The Curious Little Fish (USA)). At the moment this might be my favourite.
I got a Shelby too. He is so funny! I think mine is learning English pretty fast because I put him together with my Baby Furby, who already was speaking English. Shelby does NOT like being upside-down and will let you know it! AND will stay mad at you for a while afterwards!
My Baby Furby is very very sweet. I found it funny but touching that the poor little thing is afraid of loud sounds and the dark ("Maybe monsters???").
I am desperately trying to find a PINK (Didi) Mousies (robotic mouse from Tiger)! All the GameStops (which seems the only place that has them here) have only the blue (Fred) ones. This is a terrible mistake, as when they reach a certain age, they *must* mate or they get ILL. You can have them mate ("get married") over the Internet if you don't have an opposite-sex partner in person. But I really am hoping to find a pink Didi for my blue Fred. I haven't even started him up yet, things have been so hectic here.
It's hard to say which is my favourite pet. Do you mean robotic only? Or keychain ones also? Or on the PC/game machines? I love "Hey You, Pikachu!" ("Pikachu Genki Dechu" sp???)--for the N64, although at times he could be very very naughty and trying! :-D And I really enjoyed observing/befriending fin fin (for the PC).
Tamagotchi are very easy to raise, since they will put up with a lot and still reach adulthood. You can pause them if you need to and turn the sound off also if you need to.
Which reminds me: if you decide to get a Petal-Chi, be aware that it can actually wither and die (reset to beginning) if you under- or over-water it/don't take proper care of it! It sings up to 40 songs also (like Chirpy-Chi), but seems cuter to me than ze bird. However, you can't accidentally kill the bird. :-D
Tamagotchi for the PC was/is very very cute. It's easy to get attached to them, mainly because of their intense cuteness. :-D
But...it's hard to choose which I like best. I would say that the Mutsu gives you a feeling of companionship and cuteness and reality. I think you can find them in either K-Mart or WalMart. I got mine via eBay, because I didn't know they were available locally.
But for something quieter, some kind of keychain pet that has a sound-off option. Also, more portable. :-D
When all is said and done, there are always teddy bears, who never need batteries, are always ready for whatever may come, and are snuggly, wonderful friends. :-) (I am reading a wonderful book about bears right now, so it's gotten me in a real I-love-my-bears mood). :-)
